CPE Supervisor Program

Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisors (CPES) are a privileged few who are selected to conduct Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training because of their commitment to the program and their adherence to the high standards set by ICPT. There are two ways to become a CPES. Either proceed through our Supervisor-in-Training Program (SIT) or CPE Supervisors with other organizations may have that recognition reciprocated by ICPT. 

Requirements for the Supervisor-in-Training Program

  1. Download and read our student manual that describes the SIT training program;
  2. provide documentation for completion of four (4) units of CPE (if you have CPE SIT units from a provider other than ICPT please provide the appropriate documentation);
  3. the supervisor's evaluation from your most recently completed CPE unit;
  4. provide documentation of having earned a post-graduate degree from an accredited school or institution in the following fields:

    • Master’s degree or higher in religious studies such as Divinity, Theology, Religious Education, Rabbinic, Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, or other faith tradition studies.
    • Master’s degree or higher in Counseling, Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, or related disciplines.
    • Master’s degree or higher in clinical healthcare such as Nursing, Medicine, Psychiatry due to emphasis and inclusion of spiritual care in medical training.
  5. a brief paper (2 to 5 pages) explaining why you want to become a CPE Supervisor;
  6. documentation of current Board Certification as a Chaplain (recommended) or related experience in the field;
  7. a Faith Leader Referral form; and
  8. documentation of one year (a minimum of 2080 hours) of Pastoral Experience (a Curriculum Vitae).

New SIT Applicant - Enrollment Process in the SIT Program

Follow these steps to enroll in the SIT Program as a new applicant.

  1. Assemble the required documentation;
  2. complete and submit the SIT application with a $150.00 application fee;
  3. once your application is accepted, you will be contacted by a member of our admissions staff (within 10 business days) for an admissions interview;
  4. upon successful completion of the admissions interview, you will receive an enrollment agreement from the ICPT registrar to be completed (the form requires submission of your tuition in full); and
  5. you will be assigned a supervisor and unit.

Your application must be completed and submitted on or before the registration deadline as shown on our schedules page. All other paperwork must be completed on or before three (3) days after the registration deadline. Incomplete applications will be returned.

Requirements to become a New CPE Supervisor

(Please combine into one document and submit with your application)

  1. Complete the ICPT Supervisor-in-Training program or provide evidence of up to three (3) CPE units as an SIT from an outside agency recognized by COMISS (the candidate with CPE SIT units taken outside ICPT must complete a minimum of one (1) unit of CPE SIT under ICPT);
  2. provide a letter of recommendation from the CPE Supervisor from your final CPE SIT unit;
  3. provide a reflective autobiography giving special attention to pivotal life events and people that have shaped you as a person;
  4. provide a paper on your theory of CPE Supervision--the paper should address your theology and theories of personality and education and how these areas inform your theory of CPE Supervision;
  5. provide a detailed case study/verbatim that reflects your pastoral competency along with your personal analysis of the encounter;
  6. provide both the final self-evaluation and supervisor's evaluation from your final CPE SIT unit;
  7. provide documentation for all Higher Education degrees;
  8. provide documentation of having earned a post-graduate degree from an accredited school and institution in the following fields:

    • Master’s degree or higher in religious studies such as Divinity, Theology, Religious Education, Rabbinic, Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, or other faith tradition studies.
    • Master’s degree or higher in Counseling, Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, or related disciplines.
    • Master’s degree or higher in clinical healthcare such as Nursing, Medicine, Psychiatry due to emphasis and inclusion of spiritual care in medical training;
  9. provide documentation of current board certification as a Chaplain; and
  10. provide a Curriculum Vitae that demonstrates one year (a minimum of 2,080 hours) of pastoral experience;
  11. successfully complete a certification committee interview (Peer Review) following the completion of four (4) SIT CPE units.
  12. Requirements for Reciprocal CPE Supervisor

    1. Provide evidence of status as a current CPE Supervisor;
    2. provide a reflective autobiography giving special attention to pivotal life events and people that have shaped you as a person;
    3. provide a paper on your theory of CPE Supervision--the paper should address your theology and theories of personality and education and how these areas inform your theory of CPE Supervision;
    4. provide documentation of all Higher Education degrees;
    5. provide documentation of having earned a post-graduate degree from an accredited school or institution in the following fields:

      • Master’s degree or higher in religious studies such as Divinity, Theology, Religious Education, Rabbinic, Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, or other faith tradition studies.
      • Master’s degree or higher in Counseling, Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, or related disciplines.
      • Master’s degree or higher in clinical healthcare such as Nursing, Medicine, Psychiatry due to emphasis and inclusion of spiritual care in medical training.
    6. provide documentation of current board certification as a Chaplain;
    7. provide a Curriculum Vitae that demonstrates one year (a minimum of 2,080 hours) of pastoral experience;
    8. complete and submit a USCIS form I-9 with the appropriate documentation showing your rite to work in the USA; and
    9. complete and submit an IRS form W-9.

    2. download and complete the CPES Application;

    5. once your application is complete and accepted, you will be contacted by a member of our staff for an admissions interview; and
    6. once your interview is completed and approved you will be granted the status of CPE Supervisor (CPES).
